Kusan Mexican Production
When Kusan toy train production ended in the United States in 1960, the Alco and small car molds had already been outsourced to Plasticos Leon in Mexico. The large boxcar and stock car molds were also included. Complete trains and train parts were reportedly shipped from Tennessee to Mexico after Kusan ceased production in America. Therefore, rolling stock may have a combination of U.S. and Mexican-made parts. Trains were produced in Mexico four years, with remaining stock sold there until 1968. Production estimates vary widely, from 300 to 500 train sets annually, up to 10,000 sets per year. Mexican production ended when a Sears contract for the holidays fell through after several hundred Sears boxcars had already been produced. The factory address was Plasticos Leon, S. A. Apartado 1411, Monterrey, N.L., Mexico.
